Sports Medicine

Black Rock Equine Clinic realizes that you and your equine athlete work hard to be successful. That’s why we work hard to keep your equine athlete in peak athletic condition by diagnosing, treating, and preventing injuries and conditions that affect performance.

Lameness Exam

Our lameness exam includes: taking a thorough history, physical examination, watching the horse in motion, and joint flexion. If necessary, further diagnostics can be performed, such as radiographs, ultrasound, lab work, and nerve and/or joint blocks. Once the lameness workup is done, a treatment plan will be discussed.

Joint Injections

A common veterinary procedure used to treat joint pain and inflammation in horses. They involve injecting a medication directly into the joint space to provide targeted relief and improve joint health.

  • Hyaluronic acid: A natural lubricant that reduces friction and protects the joint.

  • Corticosteroids: Anti-inflammatory drugs that suppress pain and swelling.

  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP): A concentrated solution of platelets that promotes healing and regeneration.

  • ProStride: a steroid-free treatment derived from a horse's blood, and is a single-dose regenerative treatment.

Purchase Exams

A purchase exam consists of a thorough physical evaluation of the overall health of the animal. The physical exam includes looking at the eyes and teeth as well as listening to the horse's lungs and heart. A lameness exam is also performed to identify any existing injuries or lameness. Radiographs and lab work can be done at the buyer's request.

Scout Films

General radiographs are taken of a young horse before training begins to establish a baseline for future comparison and screen for potential issues. This radiograph series typically includes multiple views of the hocks, stifles, knees and front feet.
